Chief Officer/1st Mate

This position is sometimes known on smaller boats as First Officer or First Mate. In this position you are second in command to the captain and directly manage the deck crew.

Working in close proximity with the captain, you will assist with the navigation, passage planning. Undertake bridge watches and gain more drive time experience.

You will over see deck operations and maintenance program. Maintain records of safety inspections and crew certifications. You will also implement the safety procedures on board, carrying out various safety drills, setting watch schedules in this position you may also be the medical officer or designated security person.

Salary range

EUR 3500 to EUR 9000 Per Month

Qualifications, training and skills required
  • You will be required to hold either Chief Mate 3000gt ticket, MCA STCW Officer of the Watch or on smaller yachts the Yacht master Ocean certificates. Merchant Navy certifications are also recognised
  • Boat handling, ability to stand in for the captain when required
  • Exceptional ISM & ISPS knowledge
  • Some engineering knowledge or have a good understanding
  • Ability to work within budgets
  • Good Navigation skills
  • Knowledge of international maritime law
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of deck maintenance
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Ability to delegate and give instruction
  • Willingness to teach new skills to junior deck crew
  • Safety knowledge
  • Supervising of guest recreational activities
