Job Summary:

The bosun is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of the yacht, managing the deck crew, and ensuring the safe operation of all deck equipment and systems. As the senior member of the deck team, the bosun serves as a leader and mentor, overseeing all deck-related activities and projects. The bosun reports directly to the captain and works closely with the chief engineer to coordinate maintenance and repair tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and train the deck crew, including able-bodied seamen and deckhands, to ensure high standards of performance and safety
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance program for all deck equipment, including the tender, water toys, mooring lines, and deck hardware
  • Oversee daily deck operations such as mooring, anchoring, securing tenders and toys, and assisting with guest activities as needed
  • Manage inventory and ordering of deck supplies, tools, and equipment to maintain optimal stock levels
  • Ensure the safety and cleanliness of all deck spaces, including the swim platform, sun deck, and tender garage
  • Assist the chief engineer with maintenance and repair tasks that involve the deck systems, such as the bow thruster, stabilizers, and deck cranes
  • Coordinate with the interior team to facilitate guest movements and activities on the exterior of the yacht
  • Maintain detailed logs and records of all deck-related activities, inspections, and projects
  • Serve as a first responder in emergency situations, leading the deck crew in fire, abandon ship, or other critical scenarios
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety protocols, and ensure the deck crew does the same
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the captain or chief mate to support the overall operation of the yacht

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Preferred 2 years plus experience as a bosun or lead deckhand on a large motor yacht or superyacht
  • Yacht Master Offshore - Minimum
  • OOW 3000 or 500 for watching-keeping purposes.
  • Valid STCW certification, including Basic Safety Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Advanced Fire Fighting, and PDSD
  • ENG1 or equivalent
  • Visas: B1/B2
  • Fishing & Diving skills a bonus.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire the deck crew
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a calm and composed demeanor under pressure
  • Thorough knowledge of deck equipment, systems, and maintenance procedures
  • Proficient in the use of navigation and seamanship tools, including GPS, charts, and mooring equipment
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to liaise with the captain, engineers, and interior crew
  • Ability to work long hours, often in physically demanding conditions, and maintain a positive attitude
  • Fluency in English, with the ability to understand and communicate in additional languages (preferred)
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR, with the ability to provide emergency medical care if needed
  • Willingness to work in a diverse, multinational environment and adapt to different cultures and customs
