Summary
We are looking for a Head Chef for a Luxury Destination Retreat based just outside of Cape Town SA.
Contract: Full-time, permanent
Seasonal Rhythm: Intensive season October–April; lighter schedule May–July; six-week paid break mid-July–September
Visas: Will need to have right to work in South Africa or South African Passport
Salary: up to 55k ZAR(R) per month
Role Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on, operationally skilled Head Chef to lead and anchor the kitchen of a luxury, wellness-focused retreat. This is a unique opportunity for a culinary professional who thrives in a highly personalised, guest-centric environment and who can bring structure, calm, and consistency to daily kitchen operations.
The Head Chef will work closely with the Culinary Director and founders to execute menus tailored to individual guest preferences, dietary requirements, and seasonal availability. Collaboration with the regenerative farm team is essential to ensure the kitchen is aligned with garden production and seasonal ingredients.
Core Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and inspire the kitchen team, fostering a collaborative and respectful environment
- Oversee scheduling, workflow, and performance, ensuring smooth operations
- Support professional growth and skills development of team members
Culinary Execution & Guest Personalisation
- Execute daily menus in partnership with the Culinary Director and founders
- Personalise meals to individual guest requirements while maintaining high standards of flavour, presentation, and timing
- Adapt menus dynamically to seasonal ingredients, guest feedback, and availability
Connection to Land & Ingredients
- Collaborate with farm/produce teams to align planting and harvesting with menu needs
- Champion the use of seasonal, local, and consciously sourced ingredients
- Maintain respect for ingredient integrity and sustainability
Operational Management & Organisation
- Oversee kitchen systems, inventory, procurement, and cost control
- Ensure hygiene, organisation, and operational compliance
- Manage supplier relationships and stock efficiently, minimising waste
Collaboration & Guest Experience
- Work closely with broader F&B and guest experience teams to ensure cohesive, high-quality service
- Engage with guests as appropriate to share the culinary story behind the food
- Support special events, workshops, and immersive dining experiences
Qualities & Skills:
- Experienced, calm, and highly organised culinary leader with excellent executional ability
- Background in luxury hospitality, boutique hotels, or destination retreats
- Passion for regenerative, seasonal, and plant-forward cuisine
- Adaptable and comfortable personalising menus daily
- Strong communication and team-building skills
