1st Engineer
Salary : EUR 8500 to EUR 10000 Per Month
The First Engineer is a key figure in a yacht’s engineering department, responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems. Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer, this role ensures the vessel operates smoothly, efficiently, and in compliance with safety regulations.
First Engineers are hands-on professionals who manage propulsion systems, power generation, air conditioning, hydraulics, and other vital onboard equipment. Their technical expertise ensures that the yacht remains in top working condition, preventing system failures and responding swiftly to any mechanical issues.
Beyond technical responsibilities, the First Engineer also assists in crew management, providing leadership and training to junior engineers. They play a crucial role in maintenance scheduling, ensuring that all necessary servicing is performed efficiently while minimizing operational disruptions. Additionally, they liaise with suppliers and external contractors to source parts and coordinate major repairs.
This dynamic role requires a balance of technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and leadership capabilities. Working as a First Engineer provides an opportunity to advance into senior engineering positions while playing a fundamental role in the smooth operation of luxury superyachts.
Qualifications, training and skills required
- Engineering Certification: Y4, Y3, or STCW III/2 depending on yacht size
- Mechanical and Electrical Knowledge: Expertise in propulsion systems, generators, HVAC, hydraulics, and fuel systems
- Experience: Previous experience as a Second Engineer or extensive time as a Junior Engineer
- Safety Compliance: Strong understanding of ISM, SOLAS, and MARPOL regulations
- Leadership Skills: Ability to manage junior engineering crew and delegate tasks effectively
- Technical Problem-Solving: Quick and effective troubleshooting under pressure
- Inventory and Maintenance Management: Overseeing spare parts, scheduling maintenance, and ensuring vessel efficiency
- Emergency Response Training: Knowledge of fire safety, flooding control, and first aid
- Fuel / oil spill training
- Y4/Y3 Engineering Certificate or equivalent
- STCW Basic Safety Training
- Marine Electrical Systems Certification
- Offshore Emergency Response Training
- Advanced Marine Refrigeration & HVAC Systems Training
