Summary
Magnitude Recruitment is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Engineer to join a prestigious 55m+ sailing yacht currently under construction, then to sail with the vessel operationally. This is a rare opportunity to be heavily involved in a significant new build project from an early stage, with the position transitioning into a full-time onboard Chief Engineer role upon vessel delivery.
The successful candidate will play a key role within the owner’s project team, working closely with the shipyard and contractors to ensure the engineering development, commissioning, and delivery of the yacht meets the highest technical, Class, and Flag standards.
Key Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience within the yachting industry
- Previous experience on large sailing yachts
- Proven involvement in new build and refit projects
- Strong technical understanding of yacht design, development, and engineering systems
- Minimum qualification: Y3 CoC
- Fluent English (spoken and written)
- Proactive, highly organised, and able to work independently
- Strong leadership, communication, and coordination skills
New Build & Project Responsibilities
- Actively participate on-site during the construction phase
- Work closely with the owner’s team, shipyard, and subcontractors
- Oversee engineering development including drawing reviews and approvals
- Conduct day-to-day inspections throughout the build
- Participate in factory acceptance tests, commissioning, and sea trials
- Lead engineering meetings and coordinate with all technical stakeholders
- Ensure all Class and Flag requirements are met or exceeded
Operational Preparation & Delivery
- Prepare the vessel for operational service post-delivery
- Develop operational procedures and engineering documentation
- Populate and implement the planned maintenance system
- Manage owner-supplied equipment from delivery through commissioning
- Prepare documentation and procedures required for Mini-ISM implementation within the engineering department
Post-Delivery Responsibilities
- Transition into full-time onboard Chief Engineer upon delivery
- Manage and maintain all engineering systems to a high operational standard
- Lead the vessel’s technical team and ensure ongoing compliance and readiness
