Burgess recruitment is currently seeking a Chief Engineer for a 55m+ Sailing yacht
We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Chief Engineer to join a 55m+ private sailing superyacht on a rotational basis. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a long-standing, tight-knit crew aboard a world-cruising luxury sailing vessel. A strong team ethos, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset are essential.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum Y3 Chief Engineer Certificate (MCA or equivalent)
- Experience as Chief Engineer on yachts 50m+
- Prior experience on sailing yachts highly preferred - must understand sailing systems, rigging, and wind-powered propulsion
- Strong mechanical and electrical engineering background
Key Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for all technical, mechanical, and electrical systems onboard
- Routine maintenance and operation of main engines, generators, and auxiliary equipment
- Oversight of sailing-specific systems, including winches, furling systems, and rigging
- Management of fuel, water, and waste systems
- Ensure ongoing compliance with MCA and classification society regulations
- Budgeting and inventory control for the engineering department
- Lead and mentor junior engineering staff
- Active participation in emergency procedures and damage control
Sailing-Specific Duties
- Maintenance of deck hardware, winches, and sailing systems
- Regular inspections and upkeep of rigging and spars
- Close coordination with the deck and sailing teams during manoeuvres
- Involvement in sail performance tuning and optimization
