Summary
We’re looking for a capable and hands-on First Mate to join a 45m private sailing yacht in late September or early October 2025. The vessel will be going straight into a paint refit in Italy, so we're seeking someone who is not only confident on deck, but also highly organised and comfortable managing deck dismantling, inventory, and logistics during a yard period.
This is a small team — just the Mate and one Deckhand — so it's not a clipboard-only job. We're after someone practical who enjoys being actively involved, sets a solid tone on deck, and works well in a team that values communication and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading day-to-day deck operations and mentoring the Deckhand
- Taking charge of dismantling, storing, and protecting deck gear during the refit
- Acting as point of contact in the Captain’s absence
- Liaising with contractors and managing deck inventories
- Safety Officer responsibilities: drills, safety equipment, and documentation
- Monitoring crew and vessel certification and compliance
- Supporting sailing, mooring, anchoring, and guest operations post-refit
Candidate Profile
- Prior experience as First Mate or strong Bosun on sailing yachts (ideally 30m+)
- Solid refit or yard experience (paint refit knowledge is a plus)
- Strong leadership with a team-oriented, hands-on approach
- Must hold Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed), valid STCW, and ENG1
- ECDIS Generic required, or willingness to complete within the first 6 months onboard
- Ideally working toward YM Ocean, OOW 3000 or Master 200
- Comfortable in a close-knit, family-style program with high standards
- A willingness to commit long-term to a program where the family values each crew member — we appreciate continuity and are not looking for frequent turnover
What We Offer
- Competitive salary
- Good leave allowance (negotiable for the right candidate)
- Annual salary and leave review
- Supportive and experienced crew culture
- Opportunity to take a lead role during a significant technical phase
- Mediterranean cruising for the next two years, followed by a planned world cruise
Essential Qualifications
- STCW (95/2010)
- ENG1
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Commercially Endorsed)
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- ECDIS Generic Training (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
- Valid driver’s licence
- Schengen visa or EU residency
If you're organised, refit-savvy, and enjoy a hands-on role with leadership responsibility, we’d love to hear from you.
