Location: The Bahamas (Vessel based in Nassau, with extensive cruising throughout the Caribbean) Vessel Type: 48-meter Jamaican Flagged Charter Motor Yacht Start Date: July 1, 2025.
Seeking a highly experienced, proactive, and personable 2nd Mate / Bosun to join our professional crew on a busy 48-meter Jamaican flagged charter yacht. This crucial role requires an individual with exceptional deck skills, a keen eye for detail, and outstanding interpersonal abilities to effectively lead the deck team and interact seamlessly with discerning guests. The ideal candidate will be a natural leader, a strong team player, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and presentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deck Team Leadership & Supervision: Directly supervise and mentor junior deckhands, ensuring all deck duties are carried out efficiently, safely, and to the highest yachting standards.
- Delegate tasks effectively and ensure timely completion of all deck maintenance and operational activities.
- Conduct regular training sessions for the deck team on safety procedures, line handling, tender operations, and equipment usage.
- Foster a positive and collaborative working environment within the deck department.
- Deck Maintenance & Presentation: Oversee and actively participate in all aspects of exterior maintenance, including washing, waxing, polishing, varnishing, and brightwork upkeep to an immaculate standard.
- Conduct regular inspections of the deck, superstructure, and exterior equipment to identify and address any maintenance issues promptly.
- Manage and maintain all deck equipment, tools, and supplies, ensuring they are always clean, organized, and in good working order.
- Maintain inventory of deck stores and equipment, placing orders as needed.
- Tender & Water Sports Operations: Proficiently operate, launch, retrieve, and maintain all tenders, jet skis, and a variety of water sports toys (e.g., paddleboards, kayaks, dive gear).
- Ensure all water sports equipment is in excellent working order, clean, and safely stowed.
- Assist guests with the safe and enjoyable use of tenders and water toys, providing clear instructions and supervision.
- Docking & Mooring Operations: Expertly manage line handling, fendering, and anchoring procedures during docking, undocking, and mooring operations.
- Possess strong navigational watchkeeping skills and contribute to safe passage planning and execution.
- Guest Interaction & Service: Demonstrate strong people skills by interacting professionally, courteously, and helpfully with charter guests, anticipating their needs and ensuring a seamless experience.
- Provide informed assistance to guests regarding water activities, local information, and general requests with a friendly and accommodating demeanor.
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality regarding guest preferences and activities.
- Safety & Security: Act as the primary safety officer for the deck department, ensuring all safety protocols are strictly adhered to.
- Conduct regular safety drills (man overboard, fire, abandon ship) and ensure the deck team is fully trained and prepared for emergencies.
- Maintain all safety equipment on deck, including life rafts, life jackets, and firefighting gear.
- Contribute to the overall security of the yacht, including gangway watch and monitoring.
- Reporting & Communication: Report directly to the Chief Officer and Captain, providing regular updates on deck operations, maintenance status, and any issues.
- Maintain clear and concise communication with all crew departments to ensure smooth yacht operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a Bosun or Lead Deckhand on a large motor yacht (40m+), preferably on charter yachts.
- Proven leadership capabilities with a strong ability to motivate and manage a small team.
- Exceptional deck maintenance skills, including painting, varnishing, gel coat repair, and stainless-steel polishing.
- Advanced proficiency in tender operation and maintenance, including experience with various water sports equipment.
- Strong seamanship skills, including line handling, knot tying, anchoring, and watchkeeping.
- Mandatory Certifications: STCW Basic Safety Training (updated within 5 years)
- ENG1 Medical Certificate (valid)
- Yachtmaster Offshore / Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent (highly desirable)
- Valid Passport and eligibility to work in The Bahamas (or ability to obtain necessary visas).
- Excellent communication skills in English (verbal and written).
- Impeccable personal presentation and a professional demeanor.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and as part of a close-knit team.
- Adaptable and flexible to the demanding schedule of a charter yacht.
- Non-smoker/vaper.
