Overview
The Technical Manager will play a pivotal role in ensuring the company’s vessels remain operationally ready throughout the year. This is essential to fulfilling our commitment to clients by delivering efficient, high-quality vessels capable of operating in the most challenging environments.
The ideal candidate will be technically proficient and preferably possess previous experience working with Crew Transfer Vessels. A strong understanding of statutory codes and regulations is essential, as is experience in liaising with Flag Administrations and Recognised Organisations (ROs). This role also includes the management of the company's shore-based technical team.
As a key member of the wider operations team, the Technical Manager will contribute to ensuring full compliance with both internal policies and regulatory requirements—safeguarding the safety of our people, assets, and operations.
Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
· Assist DPA to hold live documents to enable a quick response to any emergency in an event, liaising with company Owners, Ops Manager and Crewing Manager
· Is one of the identified DDPA’s
· Be on hand to supply technical support to the shore-based engineer and crews when necessary
· Provide monthly fleet technical update
· Assist the Operations Manager to carry out internal audits and on MOL vessels
· Monitor and evaluate any audit non-conformance closeouts
· Carry out vessel visits
· Organise and attend shipyard visits
· Mange supplier and 3rd party accounts
· Attend Client meetings
· Day to day technical management of the vessels
· Attend meetings and liaise with external Recognised Organisation
· Manage the MARAD PMS system
· Assist in the resolution of vessel defects
· Monitor or manage where required new build progress and the planning process
· Monitor and report on new green energy propulsion systems and initiatives
· Monitor supplier initiatives and advancements
· Take part in any technical advice in Accident investigations
· Manage critical spare parts stock levels
· Manage vessel requirements and equipment repair status
· Be a part of the ERT
· Carry out staff appraisals
· Manage and control all technical costs in the company’s best interest
· Manage all fleet technical drawings and documentation
Requirements
Desired Experience & Qualifications
The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and/or experience:
· A diploma, degree or equivalent in Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering – candidates working towards a relevant degree/qualification will also be considered.
· A minimum of 3 years’ experience in technical ship management, dry dockings or engineering roles. Experience in the offshore wind/gas/oil sector preferred but not essential.
· Experience in liaising with Class and Flag to ensure compliance with regulations.
· Must be a good communicator, orally and in written English, capable of producing reports for senior management as required
· Be responsible for a team of shore-based engineers and specialists, organising work locations and scopes of work to be undertaken
· Experience in monitoring external contractor survey and inspection reports
· Previous experience with Caterpillar engines preferred
· Ability to discuss and propose solutions at Flag, and Class inspections, and be able to follow these through to close out
· Have the ability to carry out vessel visits with the intension of conducting conditional checks, and fair /balanced written appraisals of the engineers highlighting if necessary both good and bad practice
· Ability to demonstrate strong knowledge in record keeping, monitoring corrective action and how this can be implemented in the company processes if desired
· Ability to study, interpolate marine system drawings to enable fluid and preventative maintenance
· A strong understanding of marine systems (propulsion, electrical, HVAC)
· Be able to monitor and ensure all warranty items on new builds are documented, reported to the yard/builder and closed out
· Be adept at registering new engines for manufacturer’s warranty, as well as monitoring engine hours for future planned maintenance
· Ability to organise and lead docking periods to cover annual, intermediate and renewal mechanical surveys with knowledge and familiarity with basic compliance procedures such as Permit to Work (PTW) bunkering, confined spaces entry, etc
· Adept at Risk Assessment analysis
· Knowledge and understanding of vessel ISM compliance basic SOLAS and MARPOL compliance requirements.
· NEBOSH General Certification or other equivalent HSE qualification or a demonstrable role that incorporates a HSE aspect.
Working Location
· Scarborough, YO11 3TU – ability to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred).
· Travel as required by the business to vessel visits across the UK and Europe.
