What does an engineer do on a superyacht?

An engineer is a crew member on a superyacht who is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the vessel's engines, generators, and other technical systems. The engineer typically reports to the chief engineer or the captain and may have a team of technicians working under them.

Some of the duties of an engineer on a superyacht may include:

  • Maintaining and repairing the engines, generators, and other technical systems on the yacht
  • Overseeing the maintenance of equipment and machinery, such as winches, cranes, and davits
  • Managing the inventory of spare parts and ordering new supplies as needed
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise
  • Assisting with the operation of the yacht, including navigating and monitoring the vessel's systems
  • Ensuring that safety procedures are followed in the engineering department

In addition to these duties, an engineer may also be responsible for training and supervising junior technicians and helping to ensure that the technical systems on the yacht are operating efficiently and safely. Some engineers may also have specialized skills, such as electrical or mechanical engineering, which they can use to maintain and repair the yacht as needed.
