STCW Basic Safety Training is a one week long course, comprised of five important modules to equip you with the skills and knowledge to survive an emergency at sea. It is mandatory training for crew working on board commercial vessels over 24 meters in length, but strongly recommended to be taken by all Seafarers.

During Fire Prevention & Firefighting our Students are equipped with professional firefighting suits, helmets, shoes, gloves and properly maintained Breathing Apparatus.

•Within the Area

Our Fire facility is located at an Active Fire-Station in Contes. This is beneficial to the Student in that valuable time is not wasted travelling to far away firegrounds and spent on your tuition instead.

We have professionally trained Firefighters on hand to intervene in the event of an emergency.

What you will learn

STCW Basic Safety Training lasts one week and covers five modules.

They are Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (PSSR), Elementary First Aid (EFA), Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Fire prevention & Firefighting (FPFF), and Security Awaresness (SBS).

The course is largely classroom based, although there are two practicals, one for PST/Sea Survival and one for Fire.

For Personal Survival Techniques, we take you to the swimming pool where you will learn how to don a Survival Immersion suit and lifejacket. You will learn how to swim in the survival gear and also how to deploy and board a Survival Craft.

For the Fire practical we will take you to Contes in the idyllic countryside behind Nice. It is a working Fireground with professional Firefighters and modern well-maintained fire equipment.

Seascope also provide you with lunch on the day and everything you need for a great day out on the fireground!!

•PERSONAL SAFETY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

This module takes place in the classroom. It provides the Student with an understanding of Working Conditions onboard, and Safe Working Practices to adopt.

– Safety familiarisation training – Accident Reporting – Laws concerning Pollution & protection of Marine life – Hours of Work and Rest – Contracts

•ELEMENTARY FIRST-AID

Also classroom based, this full day course teaches the student how to react in the event of a medical emergency and the BASIC FIRST-AID techniques.

Recognising and treating Shock – Control and Prevention of Bleedingl – Fractures – Administration of CPR – Administration of Abdominal Thrust for Choking casualties

Maintainence of Accident records – Knowing how and when to seek professional help!

•PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES

Survival is the ability to stay Alive when life is threatened. This theoretical and practical course equips students with the knowledge and confidence to SURVIVE a martime emergency.

Safety drills & Muster stations – Communication – Types of Alarms – How to don lifejackets and Survival suits – Abandon Ship Procedures

•FIRE PREVENTION & FIREFIGHTING

This course runs between our classroom in Antibes and the Fireground in Contes. It is both theoretical and practical, and is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and skills to prevent and control fires that might break out onboard.

Cause of Fires onboard – How to use different types of Extinguishers – Use of professional Fire equipment – Breathing Apparatus – Communication techniques – Search and Rescue

•SECURITY AWARENESS

Theoretical course covering the importance of onboard Security Procedures, how to recognise and react in the event of security threats and measures taken by the Crew when travelling through high risk areas.

• CROWD MANAGEMENT & CRISIS MANAGEMENT &HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

The aim of the course is to increase awareness of persons responsible for the safety of passengers in an emergency situation with particular reference to:

•Shipboard emergency procedures

•Controlled response to Emergenices

•Control and management of passengers and other personnel during an emergency situation

•Establishment and maintenance of effective communications

•Dealing with and understanding Crowds in panic situations

•Shipboard drills

Our STCW Basic Training course is run in accordance with Regulation V1/1, paragraph 1 Section A-VI/1, paragraph 2.1 of the STCW Convention and Code as 1978 amended.
