Why This Course Matters
This course qualifies you to command motor yachts with an MCA-recognised certificate allowing you to captain power vessels up to 200GT, up to 150NM offshore. It meets global commercial requirements and is accepted by major flag states and insurers for commercial yacht operations worldwide. The course opens the door to senior roles, qualifying you for positions such as Captain, Relief Skipper, OOW (up to 500GT), or Delivery Captain on private and commercially coded yachts. It also serves as the required step toward IYT’s Master of Yachts Unlimited certification for ocean command.
Course Structure
Navigation & Offshore Planning
Advanced chartwork, passage planning, tides, currents, and safe routing in coastal/offshore zones.
Meteorology & Watchkeeping
Weather interpretation, COLREGs application, night operations, and bridge team duties.
Vessel Handling & Seamanship
Practical command of power vessels, anchoring, MOB procedures, docking under pressure.
Emergency & Crew Management
Radio protocol, distress procedures, and your legal responsibilities as a professional skipper.

Prerequisites
- Minimum Age: 18 years old
- Practical Experience: Adequate experience at the helm of a sailboat or twin-screw power vessel
Sea Service Requirements:
- 3,000 nautical miles logged on genuine cruises or passages (not short day trips)
- At least 2,000 miles must be on coastal voyages (not ocean crossings)
- Minimum 50 days on board at sea (a day = 24 hours)
- Minimum 30 hours of night watch underway, with at least 6 hours as captain/watch leader
Verification: Sea time must be verified and signed by the vessel’s skipper (self-signed entries require independent confirmation)
Knowledge: Working understanding of Collision Regulations and basic paper chart coastal navigation
Medical: Valid physical/medical certificate including eyesight and color vision test
Communication: VHF or Radio Operator Certificate
Safety Training: Valid MCA-approved STCW 2010 Basic Training certificates are required before the Certificate of Competency can be issued. Candidates without valid STCW can update or complete the full course alongside MoY training (additional fees apply)
VHF Certification: Candidates without a VHF SRC certificate can study online and take the exam during the MoY course (additional fees apply)
