An STCW II/5 Able Seafarer – Deck is a qualified rating at the STCW Support Level in the deck department on seagoing vessels. Duties include but are not limited to standing navigational watches, security watches, maintaining the safety and security of the ship its cargo and personnel and undertaking a range of practical seafarer skills including rope work, anchoring, mooring activities and the general operation of the ship and its systems.

Requirements

This course is one of a number of prerequisites to attaining the AB Seafarer Certificate.

To attain an AB Seafarer Deck Certificate you must hold.

Hold an AB Seafarer Deck Course Certificate.

A watch - rating certificate

Have completed mandatory STCW basic training below

STCW EFA Elementary First Aid

STCW PST Personal Survival Techniques

.STCW PSSR Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

STCW SSA Ship Security Awareness

STCW Fire Fighting

18 Months Verified Sea time

Hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than fast rescue boats).

Then apply to The MCA or other Maritime Administration for your AB Ticket.

Overview

An able seafarer must be able to work safely in enclosed spaces and at heights, and must also be able to respond to vessel emergencies, administer emergency first aid; carry out fire prevention and fire-fighting duties; be able to use survival techniques in the water; and be able to operate survival craft and rescue boats.

As of January 1, 2017, onboard a seagoing vessel of 500 GT or more, no person may serve, as an able seafarer-deck, except for in a training capacity, unless this person holds a valid STCW endorsement as II/5 Able Seafarer Deck.

This MCA Approved course includes Practical and written examinations towards the issuance of a Course Completion Certificate.

This course also includes practical sessions in knot tying and Splicing, using natural fibre and man-made fibre rope and including modern multi braids dynex, dynema 8 and 12 strand etc.
