Eligibility
Those undertaking this training must have completed STCW 95 basic training in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting and have served at sea in a merchant vessel for at least six months. Due to the Practical nature of this course all trainees must be in good health.
Course content
This course consists of theoretical and practical input for all staff that may be required to take action in the event of a fire –fighting procedures on board ship with the emphasis on organisation,
command and tactics including liaison with shore based fire fighters.
This course is aimed at Officers and fire team leaders and has greater input on risk assessment and stability than the basic course.
On completion of the training the trainees will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to enable them to:
Control fire fighting operations aboard ship.
Organise and train fire parties.
Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment.
Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire.
Outcome
Students will receive training in the following areas:
Theory of combustion, Fire behaviour & Classification of fire.
Theoretical and practical operations of fire extinguishing equipment.
Appreciation of the hazards involved in fire fighting at sea.
Fire prevention required on board ship.
Liaison with fire & rescue services.
Knowledge of fixed fire fighting systems used in the containment of fire.
Fire fighting organisation and incident command.
Compartment fire fighting techniques including control & extinction of fires.
Multi compartment fire fighting procedures & containment of fire in machine spaces.
Fire detection equipment & ship stability.
Search and rescue procedures & scenarios wearing CABA equipment.
DURATION
This course is delivered over four consecutive days at the Training and Development Academy.
CERTIFICATION
Certificates will be awarded to all students successfully completing the course.Proof of identity such as Passport/ Discharge Bok / National Insurance Number / Driving Licence/.National Identity Number will be required. Course accredited by the Marine and Coastguard Agency MCA.
