Owners, Guests and Crew Plan 3rd Rescue Mission
Flushed with the success of their first canine mission back in September, where they rescued 50 dogs from the Bahamas, the Captain, crew, guests and owners of M/Y Laurel went back in early December to rescue even more displaced dogs, and they’re already planning a third trip for January 2020.
Having gone the first time to deliver aid, with the support and backing of the owners, December 5th saw Laurel’s Captain and crew actually accompanied by the owners and their guests, all keen to get involved. Everyone playing a crucial part in providing aid and rescuing the homeless, sick and injured dogs. Each guest temporarily adopting two dogs to speed up the process of getting them to the USA. The owners have even set up their own foundation, Bailey & Friends, after their own dog, Bailey.
A week after the second mission, the “cute little puppies” described by Laurel’s Chief Officer Wikus Botes, as “mostly friendly, adoptable house dogs” were deemed in good health, quarantined and ready to be adopted. Adding “they’re in good hands, taken care of and will definitely find homes quick.”
Bowled over by how the owner’s wife was particularly involved in the mission, the crew heard how she suggested they organise another trip for January, and that every time they visit The Bahamas from now on, they take supplies such as; crates, tick and flea medicine etc so they can help and rescue as many dogs as they can each time. When they first anchored off Albany, Nassau she even set up 3 dog wash stations, one each for washing, blow-drying and cleaning their gums and ears.
“A lot of credit goes to the owners,” says Botes, surprised at their desire to join the trip and get as involved as they did. “It was very, very nice to see.” But a lot of the credit must go the crew too who work so hard to ensure the dogs safety and well being, adding that of course they love it. Happy when the puppies are onboard, knowing they’re safe and have a chance of a new home and a better life.
