Yacht Crew Hiring: A Step-by-Step Guide for Employers on Yotspot
Hiring the right crew is one of the important jobs for any employer on a yacht. The success of a yacht’s operations and the quality of guest experience often hinges on the professionalism, skill, and chemistry of its crew. Whether private or charter, the hiring process can be time-consuming and complex.
Fortunately, here at Yotspot we have modernised the way employers find and hire yacht crew. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the hiring process on Yotspot, the leading job board for the yachting industry.
Step 1: Create an Employer Account
Before you can start hiring, you’ll need to register as an employer on Yotspot and the most important part… post a role. Why? Because it connects you with the entire Yotspot crew database, including over 24,000 candidates who have chosen to opt out of crew search. You won’t find these crew members simply by browsing, posting a role is the only way to reach them.
Step 2: Post a Detailed Job Listing
Once you’re registered, post a job advert with all the key details and remember to sell the boat not just the role. You want to attract the right talent for your team, your onboard culture and the vessel. Describe the vessel, itinerary, the general vibe onboard and why someone would want this specific role. Clear, detailed listings attract more relevant candidates and save you time during shortlisting.
To make candidates think before applying, make cover letters mandatory and add pre-screener questions as this can help further down the line filter out candidates who may not be right for the job and show applicants who are genuinely interested in the role.
Step 3: Shortlist and Interview Candidates
After the job posting has been up for a couple of days, it’s time to review the applications and your search results to create a shortlist. Typically you can expect between 50 – 300 applications depending on your role type.
We know you are busy and that’s why we give you the filtering system to quickly and easily find the applications best suited for you. If you have over 100 candidates (either from a search or when viewing your applications for a live role) we pre-select 4 key filters for you that are; gender, selected yachting experience, essential qualifications and selected nationality. Then arrange interviews often done via Zoom or phone if candidates are abroad.
Step 4: Check References and Certificates
Before making an offer, do your due diligence.
- Verify documents: Ask for original STCW, ENG1, and any specialty certs
- Check references: Contact previous captains, heads of department, or agencies. We can also do this for, please get in touch with us and we can verify a reference for.
- Confirm availability: Double-check they’re not holding out for another offer or committed elsewhere
Step 5: Make an Offer and Finalise the Contract
Once you’ve chosen your ideal candidate, send a formal offer. Clearly outline:
- Start date
- Salary and payment terms
- Contract length
- Travel arrangements and joining location
- Code of conduct and uniform policy
Use a professionally drafted crew contract, ideally vetted by your yacht’s management or legal advisor.
Step 6: Onboard and Integrate
Hiring is only half the process. Onboarding your new crew member ensures they’re set up for success.
- Introduce them to the team and vessel procedures
- Review safety protocols and duties
- Assign a mentor or point of contact
- Set expectations for the role and communication
A well-integrated crew member becomes productive faster and contributes more to onboard harmony.
