The Navigation, ARPA & Radar Simulator Module is one of a set of MCA approved Courses aimed at holders of
a Yachtmaster Ocean or Offshore certificate seeking a UK OOW (Yacht) Deck Certificate of Competency.
This module is split into two parts:
Part 1: Theory covering navigation, chartwork and passage planning, Radar including manual radar plotting,
ARPA , ECDIS, GNSS, eLoran, tides, echo sounders, and speed logs. This part concludes with an end of
course examination conducted by IAMI. Upon course completion, candidates receive a ‘course completion’
certificate which is a pre-requisite for sitting the written examination.
Part 2: Simulation - five days of the extensive modern simulator facility usage at LJMU Maritime Centre which
includes the 360° field of view bridge. The candidates apply the skills for maintaining bridge watches and
application of Collision Regulations. Upon successful completion of this part, candidates are issued with a
certificate to state they have completed the simulation part of the course.
Candidates are recommended to attend the ECDIS Course prior to attending the Part 2. This is to avoid them
receiving a negative endorsement on their CoC which states ‘holders of this CoC are not permitted to work on
vessels fitted with ECDIS’. LJMU offers this course in such a way that the ECDIS course is made available prior
to Part 2 of this module.
Special discount if the 10 day Nav & Radar theory with 5 day Bridge Watchkeeping (simulation) and 5 day ECDIS course booked together.
