OMT deliver both MCA and RYA accredited courses in all aspects including engineering, medical, STCW Basic Safety Training and Fast Rescue Boat Training.

Where are you?

Our centre is based in Saxon Wharf in Southampton where we hold most of our courses. This is incredibly central being 15 minutes from the airport, 7 minutes from the train station and 10 minutes from the ferry terminal.

For more extensive details on how to find us and a list of accommodation options, Click Here.

Please note some courses are run from alternative locations.

Can anyone do the courses?

Some courses require pre-requisite qualifications, experience and/or training. This is different for each course so make sure you check that you have what you need before booking. If you are not sure just give us a call and we can talk you through it.

Also you must be over 18 for any MCA course but RYA course entry age varies.

What time does my course start and finish?

Most of our courses start at 9am and finish at 5pm. We ask that you try and get to our centre 10-15 minutes before so that you can get settled in with a tea or coffee and familiarise yourself with the centre beforehand.

What do I need to bring?

All MCA courses require you bring a form of photo ID whether this is a passport or discharge book.

If you are doing a theory course you may wish to bring a note pad.

Some RYA courses will require a passport photo for your certificates and other additional items may be required.

All the information on what you may need to bring for your course will be included in your joining instructions which will be sent to you once you have booked.

Is food provided?

We don't provide food but there are several options all within walking distance and you are more than welcome to bring along your own food and use the facilities at the centre.

What about accommodation?

Accommodation isn't included in the price of your course but we would be happy to recommend several affordable options nearby.

What is included in my course?

All course material is provided. If you are doing a practical course, foul weather gear, lifejacket, fuel and mooring fees are all included in your course.

Unlimited tea, coffee, water and squash is also available.

Do I get a certificate at the end of my course?

This is dependent on what course you take at OMT.

We will give you the information and support to pass your course.

Each course is either completed by an ongoing assessment, an oral or written exam.

Once you have successfully passed you will be issued either a RYA or MCA accredited certificate, or if you are completing an OMT approved course you will receive a course completion certificate.

What happens if I lose my certificate?

We can replace any lost certificates but you will be subject to an admin charge.

I'm leaving the forces, can I work on a super yacht?

Yes. If you have sea time and/or relevant qualifications these can be assessed on an individual basis by the MCA to evaluate how they transfer into the maritime industry. Guidelines on this can be found in the MGN 156 & MGN 195M.

However all candidates enering into the industry will require an MCA STCW Basic Training.

I want to work on a super yacht, what qualifications do I need?

To work on any vessel over 24m you are legally required to hold a valid MCA STCW Basic Training certificate.

The MCA Approved Engine Course is a necessity for anyone looking to work as an engineer. It is also the first step towards achieving your MEOL and working towards the heady heights of your Y1.

Other recommended courses to help kick start your career are the RYA Powerboat Level 2 and the RYA SRC Radio course.

Do I only have to take the course once?

Each course is different. Some certifications are for life such a the RYA SRC Radio course where as others such as first aid need revalidating every 5 years.

Also in 2017 the 2010 manilla amendments to the MCA STCW 95 will be coming in to effect. This will require the revalidation of certain STCW certifcates

For more information on each individual course and refresher courses give us a call.

If you have a question and you don't see it here why not give us a call or send us an email and we will endeavour to answer it quickly and accurately.
